North Cyprus Cuisine & Dining in Northern Cyprus
North Cyprus has numerous restaurants and café’s for you to eat in and no matter what you like, you will be spoilt for choice. Whether you want something quick and cheap, standard, traditional or the more finer foods, you will definitely find something to suit your taste.
If you want traditional Cypriot food then a smaller restaurant that caters mainly in this area is the more popular. You will find that the dishes are home make and the service more personal. Cypriots normally start their meal with a meze starter. This consists of number small amounts of cold and hot dishes such as dips, grilled hellim, sigara borek, stuffed vine leaves, salads, meats and many more. Your bread basked will be replenished regularly, and with so many delicious dishes, it will be hard not to fill yourself up before your main course is even bought out to you. The meze is eaten as a starter, although can also be ordered as a main meal. For your main meal you will find a choice of traditional Cypriot dishes such as a variety of different kebabs, Mousakka, Kleftico and more. You will find a wide selection of desserts with some of the most popular being Baklava, Muhallebi, and Sütlaç. If you eat in one of the smaller restaurants then don’t be surprised if you are talking to the owner and getting on well, that they will sit down and have a drink with you at the end of your meal. You will go away feeling as though you have made a new friend. Fruit is also eaten a lot as there are numerous orchards and as fruit is grown on the island, there are no import charges and therefore keeps the cost down.
No matter what your tastes you will find a restaurant to cater for everyone. If you like steaks, burgers, pizza, Chinese, Indian, Italian or a plainer meal, whether it’s in town or one of the villages out of town, you will find what you need.
Eating around Kyrenia harbour is a must for most tourists. The beautiful setting is relaxing during the day and you can see the boats coming and going. At night, the harbour comes alive, and with the lights around the harbour it is a beautiful setting. Another popular place to eat, both day and night, is Bellapais. Set in the mountains it is a picturesque village, with plenty of history and fantastic views over Kyrenia.
If you don’t want to go out one night, then the hotel restaurant will normally cater for most tastes. The hotels will do a reasonable food supplement if upgrading your board basis before you arrive.
