While the United Kingdom is still awakening from its traditional long and cold winter, the temperatures in North Cyprus are pefect for a spring holiday break

With an average of nine hours of sunshine a day and around 22 degrees daytime temperature, it is easy to see why many visitors come to Northern Cyprus in the spring. The warmth and the sun produce an amazing array of wild flowers, and the countryside is green, fertile and full of life.

It is a proven fact that sunlight is good for us, so a spring holiday to North Cyprus could be just what the doctor ordered! Feel the warmth of the Mediterranean sun and enjoy the beautiful scenery. A walk through the fields gives the perfect opportunity to see a diverse range of flowers, which include cyclamens, narcissi and anemones. Possibly, you will be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of the famous and rare black tulips, much sought after and expensive to buy in garden centres but which grow freely in the rich soil here. Rockier areas are home to Cyprus Roses that can be found in an assortment of different colours. Hyacinths are also abundant. For the more adventurous walker, a mountain trail can provide a glimpse of some species native to the island, including Cypriot rock cress and sage.

The orchids of Northern Cyprus are also well known and much admired, with over 30 different species including the rare Cyprus bee orchid and the Lapithos bee orchid, both indigenous to the island. Other varieties that can be seen here include the monkey orchid, holy orchid, bug orchid and giant orchid - aptly named as it can grow up to half a metre tall. A visit to the herbarium at Alevkaya is one of the best places to see samples of orchids and other wild flora found here and organised walks are available during the cooler spring months. Of course the area is renowned for its citrus and other fruit trees, and the beginning of the summer is heralded by the sweet scent of lemon and orange blossom.
